What is Biofeedback? Biofeedback is a training process which uses sensors placed on the skin to measure physiological information such as changes in breathing, skin temperature, blood flow, heart rate, sweat response, muscle tension and brain activity. This information is converted into useful information through the use of tones and visual displays on a computer screen which "feeds back" the information to a person, allowing them to make changes in the tone or display. It is like a special mirror that provides information about processes inside the body which a person might not be aware that they have control over. Self-regulation, relaxation, and imagery are often used with feedback of physical information and are skills that are essential in reducing stress, promoting health, and in the prevention and treatment of disorders that have a stress-related component. Anxiety, Asthma, Chronic Pain, Diabetes, Depression, Fibromyalgia, Headache, Hypertension, Irritable Bowel Syndrome, and Insomnia are just a few of the conditions that are responsive to Biofeedback. The training facilitates learning and acquisition of self-regulation strategies that can become lifelong skills.
