What is Complementary and Alternative Medicine? Complementary and Alternative Medicine (CAM) is commonly known as the domain of resources which are used to heal issues of the total human being, including mind, body, psyche and spirit. CAM treatments emphasize the body's innate ability to heal itself with the help of natural or noninvasive therapies. The CAM philosophy is that all of the dimensions of a person operate as a whole, each part intimately connected. In order to relieve or eliminate disease and discomfort, all contributing factors need to be addressed. These therapies can be used in conjunction with conventional treatment, hence the term, “complementary." CAM is recognized by the National Institute of Health and includes a growing and impressive list of modalities. Personal growth occurs as a part of the healing process. Ultimately, the depth of CAM may lead to optimal health and self-realization.
