Dr. Kelly S. Johnson, a clinical psychologist, school psychologist and neuropsychologist provides comprehensive assessments for children, adolescents, and adults with challenges in attention, concentration, memory, learning, and emotional functioning.  The individualized, systematic evaluations are aimed at evaluating the faculties of attention, learning, memory, language, visuo-spatial, sensory motor, and executive functioning to understand the interplay between brain-related functioning and current performance.  The meta-cognitive skills of planning, organization and problem-solving are further investigated to better examine the way in which individuals synthesize such skills and adapt and respond to their environments. Emotional functioning and quality of life issues are addressed as well.

Such comprehensive testing is aimed at better understanding the subcomponent skills that serve as the underpinnings to functioning.  Children who resist writing tasks, for instance, often have grapho-motor challenges, speed of processing, working memory or organizational issues that contribute to resistance.  Those who repeatedly “forget” material after having studied and prepared for tests, might have meta-cognitive deficits that interrupt retention.  Such an understanding of the “why” in the child’s or adult’s behavior helps to better understand whether the behavior is volitional, anxiety-driven, emotionally-linked, related to cognitive deficits or all of the above. Knowing “why” individuals struggle in the areas that they do is key to guiding effective recommendations that serve as guidelines for interventions.

In short, developing such a thorough understanding of an individual’s cognitive and adaptation profile is key to unlocking the mystery as to what interrupts one’s capacity to function at higher levels.  The goal is that strengths will be identified and recommendations made to build upon the strengths, while the areas of weakness will be addressed with key solutions to alter them.
